Westbrook, ME (April, 2015) –The Planet Dog Foundation (PDF), the charitable giving arm of pet industry leader Planet Dog, has announced a yearlong partnership with the New York-based Good Dog Foundation. PDF leads the pack for philanthropic giving in the pet industry, funding organizations that train, place, and support dogs working to help people in need. The Good Dog Foundation is a leader in therapy dog service, known for developing best practices in training, certification and quality controls for their 1,000+ dog/handler teams.

PDF has awarded Good Dog with a $15,000 grant towards the provision of therapy dog services throughout Fairfield County, CT and Westchester County, NY. Good Dog teams visit hospitals, trauma centers, education facilities, nursing homes and disaster sites helping thousands of people through the stresses of disease, injury, aging, learning disorders, disabilities and other life crises. Their emphasis on the healing potential of the human-animal bond dovetails perfectly with PDF’s commitment to bringing people and dogs together for mutual benefit and support.

“The Planet Dog Foundation is committed to supporting those organizations that exemplify excellence and best practices. The Good Dog Foundation delivers model core services while working to establish the highest standards of excellence,” says Kristen Smith, Executive Director of PDF. “We are proud to sponsor their provision of services to a broad spectrum of people in need of animal-assisted therapy.”

According to Rachel McPherson, Founder and Executive Director of Good Dog: “There is growing demand for animal-assisted therapy services for traumatized and stressed populations,” said Rachel McPherson, Founder and Executive Director of Good Dog. “The Planet Dog Foundation is providing a grant to help us fulfill this demand. We feel lucky to have a partner whose goals mesh with ours so completely.”

PDF is funded through the sale of Planet Dog products, with 2% of every sale going to the Foundation’s grant budget. This level of commitment from Planet Dog leads not only the pet industry, but corporate giving in any industry. Since 2006, PDF has awarded more than $1 million in cash grants and product donations to exemplary non-profits including service and assistance dog programs, therapy dog programs, K-9 search and rescue organizations, police, fire and military K-9 units, medical alert dogs, and many more. The reach and visibility of the partnership with Good Dog will allow Planet Dog customers and retailers to see firsthand the benefit of their 2% in action.

In addition to funding direct service, PDF is committed to advancing accredited medical research that legitimizes the work dogs are doing, and quantifies the results. Good Dog sets the bar for excellence in animal-assisted therapy, and recently supported the first medically-based clinical trial that documents a significant, measurable increase in emotional well-being and quality of life in patients receiving intensive multi-modal treatments for cancer.1
