Westbrook, ME (January, 2015) – Planet Dog is wagging with pride since its Co-CEO and Owner, Stephanie Volo, has joined the Board of Directors for the Pet Industry Sustainability Coalition (PISC). Established in 2013, the Pet Industry Sustainability Coalition accelerates environmental and social sustainability through education, implementation tools, and collaboration. PISC promotes creative collaboration throughout the pet industry that prioritizes business minded solutions for sincere environmental improvement.
Planet Dog was an early champion of PISC, becoming a founding member in 2013. Their initial $10,000 investment helped the new non-profit to create the Pet Industry Sustainability Toolkit that has provided manufacturers, distributors and retailers tools and resources to navigate a clear pathway toward improved environmental performance in the pet industry. Since then, PISC has launched several successful programs including The Accelerator that brought innovative partnerships to the industry, and initiated the first assessment mechanism for companies to measure their sustainability performance and build a roadmap for improvement. With more than 100 current members, PISC is the leading voice in the pet industry for a concrete and lasting collaborative commitment to sustainability.
“Planet Dog has embraced the efforts of the Pet Industry Sustainability Coalition to extend these values and commitment to the pet industry since day one. I am honored to solidify our involvement with a seat on the Board,” says Stephanie Volo, Planet Dog’s Top Dog and Partner. “I am proud to join other industry leaders as we create a lasting platform to strengthen the industry as a whole while protecting our most valuable resource, our planet. We recently gathered for several days in Boulder, Colorado to set the annual PISC agenda and I am excited about the great momentum we are building,” adds Volo.
Volo joins an impressive team of industry leaders including Chris Bentley: VP Sales & Sustainability, “I and love and you”; Aaron Lamstein: Board Member and Founder, Worldwise, Inc.; Spencer Williams: President, West Paw Design; Craig Rexford: VP & Publisher, Pet Age Media; Toby Russell: CEO, Natural Capitalism Solutions; and Caitlyn Bolton: Harvard Sustainability and Environmental Management Graduate and Executive Director, PISC.
“Planet Dog has been thinking globally and acting doggedly since 1997 and we are committed to the notion that our values bring us our value,” says Volo. “We have consistently worked to provide the highest quality pet products made with a deep concern for the environment, and our customers have rewarded us with their loyalty because of it. We are excited to be launching a new strategic sustainability initiative with PISC partner Natural Capitalism Solutions that will deepen our efforts over the coming year,” she adds.
Examples of Planet Dog’s commitment to sustainability include the development of their non-toxic, recyclable Orbee-Tuff® material, a strong employee engagement program, and its industry-leading commitment to philanthropy. The company donates 2% of every purchase to the Planet Dog Foundation (PDF), its non-profit grantmaking organization, to support canine service programs across the country. Since 2006, PDF has given away more than $1 million in cash grants and in-kind product donations to help dogs who help people in need. http://www.planetdog.foundation.org.
